Meet The Team

Timothy Allcott | Partner

MRICS, MCIOB, C.Build.E. FCABE

Timothy is a Partner of Allcott Associates LLP and the driver behind its growth from a small firm of building surveyors in the Midlands to countrywide residentialcommercial and valuations practice to be reckoned with.

Timothy started his career as a building surveyor at Watts PLC, an international firm of property consultants, before gaining chartered status with the RICS, and later, membership with CIOB and CABE. He still oversees growth and development of the practice, as well as researching new business opportunities and making sure that the company stays abreast of the latest developments in surveying.

Rather averse to sitting behind a desk all day, Timothy continues to work on the ground, carrying out surveys in the area around his home in Oxfordshire. This way, he is able to maintain individual client contact and support the surveying team with any queries and issues they may have on site.

Timothy specialises in residential surveyinglisted buildings and conservation. He is an enthusiastic advocate of combining surveying and structural engineering expertise to deliver expert technical and structural insight for clients.

matthew baker

Matthew Baker | Partner

MRICS, C.Build.E MCABE

Matthew joined Allcott Associates in 2011 as a Partner and Chartered Building Surveyor, bringing a new dynamic to the partnership and a wealth of experience in both private commercial projects and public local authority work.

Matthew first met Timothy when they both worked at Watts PLC. They are both fond of recounting a moment when they were standing on top of the high-rise Rotunda building in Birmingham together, during a commercial survey. It was at that moment, gazing across the Birmingham skyline, that they first floated the idea of running their own surveying firm.

Since joining the company, Matthew has been instrumental in growing the commercial side of the firm, which has flourished to become a thriving practice. Matthew’s technical knowledge of the construction industry is evidenced by the broad range of work he has delivered to excellent standards; testament to this, much of our commercial work is through repeat business.

Matthew also enjoys supporting the residential work that we do, and particularly enjoys the opportunity to use his early career experience of historic building management when inspecting older properties and listed buildings.

James Bodicoat | Partner

MEng, CEng, MICE, MIStructE

James is chartered with both the Institution of Structural Engineers (MIStructE) and the Institution of Civil Engineers (MICE) and has over 20 years’ experience working as a structural engineer for major international engineering consultants. In addition to his work on residential properties, James has led projects from inception to completion across a range of sectors, including higher education, commercial, retail and leisure. He has substantial experience of structural refurbishment and working on listed buildings, in addition to many new build projects.

He has demonstrable experience of designing in all major materials, with an emphasis on steel framed structures. James’ vast experience means that his is adept at most structural engineering works for residential properties, including beam calculationsfeasibility studies and load capacity assessments. He brings skills and insight gained through working with other professionals in a multidisciplinary design environment to all of his projects, whether it’s undertaking the concept design for a multi-million pound new build or designing the steel beams and columns for a house extension.

David Thomas | Associate Partner

MRICS, MFPWS

David is a Chartered Building Surveyor and Member of RICS. He has practised as a building surveyor since 2001, following completion of a vocational degree in Building Surveying at the University of Glamorgan. He was later elected to membership of RICS in 2009.

Since joining Allcott Associates in 2015, David has been able to draw on the knowledge he gained across his years in international surveying consultancies to support the growth of our residential and commercial concerns. On the residential side, his extensive experience in providing building surveysHomeBuyer surveys and specific defect surveys on a wide range of properties allows him to produce reports of the highest standard, while at the same time providing advice to other members of the team. David is our resident guru in expert witness, assisting courts and tribunals with their proceedings. He also specialises in party wall services, and is an elected member of the Faculty of Party Wall Surveyors.

G. Thompson

Gary Thompson | Partner

FRICS

Gary is a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. Heading up the valuations and Expert Witness side of our business, Gary has practised for several decades in those fields. His expertise is wide-ranging, and he has particularly strong insight into the regulations governing our industry, having previously served as a regional chairman of the RICS and a national chairman of the Independent Surveyors and Valuers Association: Young Valuers and Auctioneers division.

Gary’s experience supporting clients across the country with residential and commercial property valuations and expert witness reports is an invaluable addition to our knowledge-base at Allcotts, and Gary’s skills in CPD mean that the entire team benefits from his expertise.

David Allcott | Consultant Structural Engineer

David Allcott founded Allcott Associates in 1999 in order to provide a professional building consultancy service for the Midlands area. Prior to setting up his own business, David worked in many various fields of the construction sector, including structural engineering, subsidence and underpinning, dilapidations, chemical contaminations, project management and general management.

David has gained his degree in Civil Engineering in 1979 and became a member of the Institute of Civil Engineers (MICE) in the same year. He quickly built on his academic knowledge with various roles in high-profile construction companies, gaining valuable experience which he then applied in the foundation of his own business.

As both a Structural Engineer and a member of the RICS, David has keen insight into all aspects of property condition and structure.  As the company has grown, David has developed his role. He now specialises in specific defect surveys, but frequently draws on his background in project management, contract administration, structural appraisals and expert witness. The large-scale commercial work that he has undertaken for solicitors, councils and insurers are testament to the experience and knowledge that he has built up throughout his career.

Stuart Scoffin | Building Surveyor

MRICS

Stuart is an RICS Chartered Building Surveyor with building experience spanning 22 years, working within local authority, social housing and private practice. Stuart has held a variety of roles during his career, from building surveyor to project manager. He has even acted as the principal designer in the delivery of multidiscipline refurbishment and planned maintenance programmes for a variety of residential and commercial clients, with project values of up to £28M.

In recent years, Stuart has drawn on his extensive experience in the delivery of professional commercial services to apply his knowledge to a broad range of residential property types and circumstances. His knowledge of building pathology and defects means that he provides expert insight into building condition. His qualification and experience as a Fire Risk Assessor gives Stuart an additional perspective when surveying a property, and he often advises our other surveyors on matters associated with such risks.

Peter Mallinson | Building Surveyor

Pete is an RICS Chartered Building Surveyor with a breadth of experience covering both residential and commercial property. Working in his home county of Nottinghamshire, Pete pioneered our RICS valuations, and regularly works with mortgage panels to deliver high-quality, efficient property valuations. Pete also carries out numerous building surveys and HomeBuyer surveys each month and has a particular interest in social housing and non-standard construction.

Pete also brings valuable commercial experience to the team, including project management, contract administration, procurement and design and specification for public and private sector clients. His commitment to providing an excellent service is evident in the quality of reports and the strong relationships that he has built, both with clients and within the company.

Philip Holman MRICS

Philip Holman | Building Surveyor

MRICS

Philip is a Chartered Building Surveyor with a wealth of residential property experience gained during the twenty-four years that he has been a practising.

The majority of his career has been spent in private practice providing a full range of professional services. Philip brings excellent attention to detail and a high-level of technical knowledge to his home building surveys, drawing not only on his residential experience, but also on his work in defect investigation, commercial surveys and the contract administration of refurbishment schemes for residential and commercial buildings. He has also worked on the preparation and negotiation of dilapidation claims for both private, commercial, and public sector clients.

With a background in engineering, and a decade working for himself in residential development, Philip brings a very pragmatic approach to surveying and is an enthusiastic supporter of the firms’ ambition to provide practical advice and effective solutions to its clients.

Jane Sayers

Carrying out full building and homebuyer surveys in the fast-paced Reading area, Jane is a key member of our surveying team. Jane draws on her 35 years of experience in the surveying and architecture industry to provide expert insight on building pathology in properties across Berkshire and north Hampshire.

The Reading region is one of our busiest survey patches, so Jane’s extensive expertise is regularly put to effective use in supporting people moving home. Whether it is a first time buyer purchasing a modern property, or a seasoned homeowner going for a listed building, Jane’s advice has proved invaluable at helping people make informed purchasing decisions.

Having also worked in the corporate and educational fields, Jane has a breadth of knowledge that benefits her clients by providing observations and comments that others may not have considered. Helping would-be owners gain a thorough understanding of the maintenance and liabilities associated with the property they are taking on, while balancing that with a practical viewpoint and reassurance when necessary, makes Jane an excellent building surveyor and a favourite among our Reading clients.

Simon Brassington

Simon Brassington | Building Surveyor

With a string of qualifications to his name, it’s no surprise that Simon is a highly experienced building surveyor with a broad range of expertise. With a passion for understanding building pathology and and in-depth knowledge of structural defects, Simon has a flair for structural inspection that is hard to match.

Living and working in the thriving West Midlands region, Simon has an excellent knowledge of the properties in the area, whether the instruction is for city centre Birmingham, rural Warwickshire or market towns like Oldbury and Tamworth. While most of Simon’s work in recent years has focussed on RICS home surveys, he has previously worked in commercial surveying, providing inspections and even structural designs for a range of property types. He has even turned is hand to solar panel installation surveys.

Simon is a firm believer in providing a comprehensive service to his building survey clients. His structural expertise means that he has the capabilities to assess many structural defects himself, without needing to refer the matter to an engineer.

Joe Murrell | Structural Engineer

BEng (Hons), MSc

Joe’s addition to Allcott Associates has been a huge boost to the structural engineering team. Joe’s expertise across both residential and commercial structural engineering has meant we’ve been able to help more clients across the Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire regions.

Joe works closely with the head office in Warwickshire, supporting residential clients with specific structural investigations and beam calculations. He also supports the commercial team, getting involved with everything from structural design to foundation assessments and roof calculations for PV panels.

Joe utilises his 11 years of experience in the design of steel, concrete, timber, and masonry structures to advise our clients on all types of project, from small residential properties to multi-million pound, large-scale industrial units.

R. Pyle

Robert Pyle | Building Surveyor

MRICS

Robert is an RICS chartered building surveyor covering Oxford and surrounding towns and villages. With a focus on high-quality survey assessments and reporting, Rob’s surveys are in-depth and thorough, with no stone left unturned.

Rob’s past experience includes some commercial surveying work, such as dilapidations and party wall. Rob became a chartered member of the RICS a decade ago, and has since developed extensive expertise in residential properties. In addition to RICS Level 3 and Level 2 surveys across a variety of property types, Rob has performed countless market valuations.

Rob’s current work takes him across the Oxfordshire county, from Chipping Norton cottages and townhouses, to city centre Edwardian terraces and apartments. Whether the property is listed and needs careful maintenance, or is a brand new build, Rob uses his years of knowledge to provide invaluable advice on the presence, extent and potential costs of any defects.

Paul Allcock | Building Surveyor

Paul is an RICS Chartered Building Surveyor and has been involved in the field of residential surveying since 2004. Working near his hometown of Penistone means that Paul has extensive knowledge of the area he’s surveying, and can provide specialist advice on issues common to new and old properties alike in both rural and urban Yorkshire settings.
Before joining Allcott Associates, Paul developed his extensive technical construction knowledge during 13 years working in the both the residential and commercial sectors. During this time his focus was predominately on local authority, housing association and financial sector clients. Working as a building control surveyor and undertaking a variety of property inspections gave Paul the experience needed to successfully transition to Allcott Associates, where he has further developed his knowledge and skills in fire safety, historic building conservation and party wall services.
 
T. Goodman

Thomas Goodman | Surveyor

MRICS

Thomas is an RICS registered valuer and chartered surveyor, with range of expertiese in residential property. As well as carrying out full building and homebuyer surveys in the Doncaster area, Tom regularly acts as an expert witness on construction and boundary disputes.

Tom’s passion for valuations makes him one of our lead commercial and residential valuers, and he carries out Red Book valuations for a broad range of clients.

With extensive experience in preparing expert witness statements and dealing with building disputes, Tom is adept at compiling reports that are compliant with CPR 35, and attends court hearings when required.

P. Barrett

Paul Barrett | Building Surveyor

Paul is an RICS Chartered Building Surveyor and has been involved in the field of residential surveying since the late 90s. Paul has extensive knowledge of the Sheffield and Manchester areas, meaning that when he’s surveying, he can provide specialist advice on issues common to new and old properties alike. Living in the stunning Peak District, Paul has an excellent knowledge of rural property as well as urban construction, making him a great asset within the surveying team.

Before joining Allcott Associates, Paul developed his extensive technical construction knowledge working in the both the residential and commercial sectors. He also spent several years acting as a Senior Building Surveyor for a local authority, working across all areas of public sector building management for both residential and retail properties. Paul has experience working a range of properties, from small terraces and new-builds, to multi-million pound projects.

 
David Hannaford

David is an RICS chartered surveyor with 2 decades of experience in surveying residential properties. Covering Cambridge, Ipswich and Bury St Edmonds, David is skilled in the full spectrum of residential surveying, and has extensive experience in undertaking both HomeBuyer and Level 3 Full Building Surveys.

David is equally at home working on new builds and period properties, and draws on his years in the industry to provide in-depth advice on both traditional and non-traditional forms of construction. As one of our team’s experts on listed and heritage buildings, David regularly assesses period homes and can provide detailed advice on appropriate materials and techniques for repairs and maintenance of these unique properties.

Having previously worked in the commercial surveying sector, working on David also has considerable experience working with housing associations, and on educational buildings and churches. David is comfortable with all types and ages of property and has a breadth of experience that provides valuable insight for his clients.

His wide ranging experience means that David is an expert at defect analysis. His expertise allows him to put together accurate estimates of costs for rectification, alteration and maintenance works for a variety of building stock – an invaluable skill to use when helping people purchasing a new home.

Paul Cunniff

Paul Cunniff | Building Surveyor

With over 30 years of experience of building surveying, Paul has brought a wealth of expertise to the Yorkshire arm of our team. His diverse past experience ranges from carrying out repairs surveys for a local authority to an apprenticeship at York Minster. More recently, Paul has focussed on HomeBuyers and Structural Building Surveys in the Leeds and York areas.

While he regularly surveys all types of domestic properties, from modern mass built housing, to 17th century stone cottages, he has a particular interest in heritage properties. Paul is a key source of information among the team whenever a historic building needs management, repair, or renovation, and regularly advises on the use of traditional building materials and techniques.

Already an AssocRICS member, Paul made the most of lockdown by using the time to gain his MCABE qualification. He is also a full member of the RPSA and is working towards achieving IHBC status. Paul is passionate about training other surveyors and using his specialist knowledge to support colleagues and peers around the country.

Mark Gazzard | Building Surveyor

Mark joined our every-growing Bristol team in 2022, bringing with him a wealth of experience in all types of property, both residential and commercial.

Mark has been working in and around Bristol throughout his surveying career, and his passion for the city is clear. Bristol has a huge variety of housing stock and every day is different – Mark relishes the challenge of visiting a historic property one day, followed by a unique new-build design the next.

Passionate about helping clients get the most from their properties, Mark is a fantastic source of advice on refurbishments and repurposing property, and his extensive experience in contract administration means that he is ideally placed to support clients with grand designs for their new acquisitions.

Chris Dunstan Cheltenham

Chris has over 20 years experience in residential, local authority and commercial property.

Chris has extensive experience of HomeBuyer and full structural building surveys across the Bristol and Gloucestershire regions. Having managed large teams of residential surveyors undertaking residential surveys on behalf of private and commercial clients, Chris is familiar with pretty much any defect a property can throw at him. His experience of commissioning and delivery of home inspection products for the South of the country, as well as the development of new products and legislative compliance means he brings a different perspective to home surveys.

Chris spent the early part of his career in private practice, undertaking defect diagnosis, specification and design works in the local authority, housing association and education sectors. Chris has extensive experience in the specification, design and project management of refurbishment and extension projects; this has given him a keen understanding of building pathology.

Gareth Morgan

Gareth has lived and worked in the Milton Keynes region throughout his career, and consequently is an expert on the area’s towns and villages. Since achieving his AssocRICS qualification, Gareth has worked on a variety of Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire. He began his building surveying career focussing on newly built properties, of which there are many in our Milton Keynes and Luton survey areas. He honed his knowledge of building regulations to the extent that he is now one of our team’s go-to experts.

 

More recently, Gareth has developed a passion for period properties, applying his extensive building pathology knowledge to level 3 building surveys of Victorian terraces and country cottages across the region.

 
Jon Powell

Jon prides himself on building excellent relationships with our clients, ensuring that they receive a great service. With many clients coming back to him for surveys time and time again, Jon is a popular surveyor for clients requesting surveys in the West Midlands region.

Previously working as part of a building consultancy department at a commercial firm, Jon has expertise in a broad range of survey types, including party wall and refurbishment services.  Jon always makes sure that he delivers reports that are of the highest standards that are also accessible and easy to interpret. Additionally, he finds it rewarding to resolve a problem as a result of great planning and always takes the time to understand the client’s brief.

Mark Davies

Mark Davies has a breadth and level of experience that is difficult to match. With more than 25 years’ experience in the private and public sectors, and has occupied many senior roles whilst working on a wide portfolio of commercial, education, leisure, retail and residential schemes, ranging from maintenance projects to multi-million pound refurbishments and developments.

 

Mark is experienced in full building surveys, stock condition surveys, planned maintenance programmes, schedules of condition, defect analysis reports, dilapidation reports and party wall surveys. Whilst Mark’s focus has been on properties in the West Midlands, his expertise has led him across the country, from carrying out building surveys of children’s centres in Suffolk to refurbishment of the Imperial War Museum in London.

Kerry Baker | Surveyor

Kerry has over fifteen years of experience in property management, working both in large agencies and managing her own residential lettings business. As her interest in property condition grew, Kerry made the decision to change course slightly and has recently qualified as an AssocRICS Surveyor. Alongside her valuation and surveying work, Kerry is PA to the partners, giving her fantastic insight into the day-to-day workings of a surveying firm.

Akhtar Khan

Akhtar Khan joined us in 2019 as an RICS Registered Valuer and member of the RICS Registered Valuer Scheme. After studying Real Estate in Sheffield, he has spent the past few years developing his experience in the residential property sector, carrying out HomeBuyer reports and Red Book valuations for mortgage lending purposes. This has allowed him to gain a breadth of experience of different property types and localities.

Akhtar specialises in mortgage valuations in the Sheffield area and is intent on developing his experience still further through the support of the company and his fellow surveyors.

Kim’s focus is on seeking out new opportunities to grow the practice while maintaining the excellent client service standards that Allcott Associates is known for. By working on public liaison, educational content and internal policies and practices, Kim aims to continuously improve and modernize surveying practices. By doing so, she hopes to benefit both those in the industry and those that rely on it for residential and commercial services

With over 7 years’ experience at Allcott Associates, Judy knows the company inside out. She provides vital support to surveyors with the management of their diaries, and is an expert at finding appointments that suit both clients and surveyors alike. Judy is also responsible for taking bookings and managing the secretarial work.

Elaine joined us as a secretary in 2015, after which time she quickly developed a skill for managing bookings and supporting Judy with organising the commitments of our fast-growing team of surveyors. Elaine now focuses solely on bookings and diary management and is an excellent source of support to the field team.

Since Jane took the lead with our fantastic team of secretaries, our in-house report production has gone from strength to strength. As well as being a skilled typist herself, Jane manages the constant flow of reports through our team, ensuring that clients receive the findings from their surveys quickly, in high-quality formats that are straightforward yet detailed.

Kevin joined the team in 2018 to take on the task of managing the company books and commercial bookings.
